Urial, Argali, Ibex
Perhaps the most under-hunted country of Central Asia, Uzbekistan is a rare gem calling out to both species collectors and those desiring to hunt in as many destinations of the Asian frontier as possible. Bordered by 5 countries: Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan, it is emerging as a go-to destination for several elite species. Caprinae Safaris has expanded its focus on Uzbekistan because of its exceptional possibilities for traveling hunters.
Historically, Uzbekistan (translated as Land of the Free) was a strategic trading center along the Old Silk Road, the ancient "highway" connecting China with Europe and the Middle East. It is one of only two double land-locked countries. Vast in area size (449000 sq. km. / 174000 sq. mi.), nearly 80% of the country is covered by flat, arid desert terrain, including the Kyzylkum Desert, which it shares with Kazakhstan. In contrast, the Tian Shan mountain range rises in the east, with peaks reaching up to 4500 m. (14800 ft).
Our local outfitter is among the most professional in Asia and is distinguished by scientific conservation practices, including resettlement of certain species within the territories they previously inhabited. Proven guides skilled in trophy hunting, well-equipped and strategically located camps accessible to each species, and seamless logistical ground operations ensure a high quality experience. As prolific hunters themselves, our team has developed surgical hunt strategies for each species and mastered trophy judging ability.
Among Uzbekistan's most exclusive species is the Kugitang Markhor, found at elevations of 1500-2500 m. (5000-8000 ft.) on the Kugitang Ridge straddling the border between southeastern Turkmenistan and southwestern Uzbekistan. Years of intensive investment and a combination of biotech and protective conservation practices ensure the sustainability of this noble icon of Asia's mountains. Historically, hunts have been 100% successful.
Bukhara Urial is another major Capra attraction found on the eastern side of the Turkman slope of Kugitanga and directly accessible from our Markhor camp. Uzbekistan's population of Transcaspian Urial is located in the desert-like Karakalpak region and is part of a cross-border herd shared with Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Here we use fly camps embedded in their daily travel routes.
A wild population of Severtzov Argali, the smallest of the argali family, is found in the Nurata National Reserve in the central Nuratau Range. Thanks to anti-poaching patrols and countermeasures to combat illegal grazing, the Severtzov is thriving.
Perhaps one of the most popular mountain species of Asia and where most hunters begin their mountain hunting "careers" in Asia is the Mid-Asian Ibex. Uzbekistan has them in big numbers and trophy quality potential is extremely high for patient and discerning hunters due to lack of hunting pressure. We have a comfortable and modern farmhouse serving as basecamp and also use high mountain spike camps accessible by helicopter insertion.
Bukhara Deer, a sub-species of the European red deer, are found in the riparian forests and bordering grasslands of the Horezm region. Comfortable yurts serve as our lodging. And the Jizzakh region is home to the dainty Blacktail Gazelle.
Uzbek is the official language, but Russian is the de facto language spoken by most of the country's 36 million inhabitants. Uzbekistan is also rated as one of the safest countries in the world, and the Uzbeks are among the friendliest and most genuine people ever to host tourists and international hunters.
